My phone is going off with calls and texts regarding the holidays. Everyone is trying to get dates and times set as well as who is going where. Table settings are being planned and the menu is being written in pencil, sure to be worn from eraser marks and constant changes right up until the food is on the table. With so much going on I wanted to make my list and check it twice. I also want to make sure that the meals I am serving to guests who may be staying awhile are easy and don’t take away from my visitation time!
Cornish game hens lend themselves well to several cooking methods, including roasting, smoking and slow cooking. Employing a slow cooker to prepare Cornish hen offers numerous advantages. A slow cooker facilitates a moist-heat cooking environment, and its temperature cannot rise above the boiling point of the liquid it contains; this curbs the excess moisture loss that often results in a dry.
Enter a protein that I think most of us may not know how to prepare but that offers amazing flavor and an elegant meal for any occasion. These little hens can be roasted, boiled, fried and even cooked in the Slow Cooker. Pairing them with a red wine makes them an elegant choice as well!
So in the interest of creating something amazing, but easy, for my holiday guests, I am making Slow Cooker Wild Rice Stuffed Cornish Game Hens! It is so easy you may have to have them for dinner tonight!

This recipe is incredibly easy and starts with a trip to Sam’s Club and the picking up of their Sam’s Club Instant Savings booklet. With an instant coupon for $3.75 off the Tyson® All Natural Premium Cornish Hens, it is a valuable resource that will save you big!
Shop the frozen section and find the 6 pack of the Premium Cornish Hens. I found mine on an end cap. I turned around and, in the middle of the store, on a pallet, was the Constellation Wine variety I wanted, Ravage Cabernet Sauvignon.
Now that you have your supplies on hand, let’s talk about the easiest recipe ever. It really is amazing how beautiful the Slow Cooker Wild Rice Stuffed Cornish Game Hen comes out. You have the option of adding the wine into the recipe for a richer flavor or to use water or chicken broth and just serve it on the side. I added the wine in because I love the warm flavor on a protein that can absorb it well. It will give the hens a slightly purple hue but the taste is amazing!
Slow Cooker Wild Rice Stuffed Cornish Game Hen Recipe
This Slow Cooker Wild Rice Stuffed Cornish Game Hen will impress your guests with amazing flavor and elegance
Recipe type: Slow Cooker Cornish Game Hens
- 2 Cornish Hens for a 3½ quart slow cooker
- ½ cup long grain wild rice
- ½ apple, chopped into small pieces
- ¼ cup onion, chopped
- ⅛ tsp. thyme
- ⅛ tsp. basil
- ⅛ tsp. garlic powder
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 chicken bouillon cube
- ½ cup Constellation Wine
- Water to fill to the top and cover the hens
- 1½ cups water or ½ water(give or take)
- Take 2 of the Cornish Hens from the 6 pack, you can double this recipe if you have a larger slow cooker, and open the packages. Gently rinse the outside and inside of the bird. Pat dry with a paper towel and set aside.
- In a bowl, add the wild rice, apples, onion, thyme, basil and garlic powder. Mix well.
- Stuff the Tyson® All Natural Premium Cornish Hens with the mixture and place breast down in the slow cooker. Salt and pepper generously.
- Add the Constellation Wine and then add enough water to cover the hens completely.
- Cook on low for 8 hours.
You do have the option to leave the wine out and to add more water, or to add a 1/2 cup of chicken broth in it’s place.
You can even season the dish any way you want. Add grill seasoning instead of thyme, basil and garlic powder. Any good herb will sing in this dish.
The advantage of the slow cooker is that the meat, literally, just falls from the bone! If you are making a stuffing, you can make a few Cornish Hen, easily dice up the meat and add it in as an extra protein source! It comes out that juicy and delicious!
I served my Slow Cooker Wild Rice Stuffed Cornish Game Hen Recipe with some whole roasted tomatoes and enjoyed an elegant dinner with a glass of Constellation Wines to really enhance the flavor.

If you think serving a gourmet holiday meal with three young children sounds like an impossible task, well…you’re right.
At least, it would be impossible if you are doing it by yourself, and serving up something that takes hours and hours of work and labor to do.

(Or unless you are superwoman)
Since most moms don’t have extra hours and hours to prepare one meal, making a gourmet holiday meal seems like something that has to be relegated to the empty nesting years.
Not so!
Here are 5 easy steps to make a simple meal at home into a gourmet holiday meal.
- Make the preparation super simple: The idea is for the meal to only LOOK difficult. Find a recipe that would work to wow the guests while keeping you away from the kitchen as long as possible. See the Crock Pot Cornish Hens recipe below for one of my favorite ways to do this.
- Get out the fancy dinnerware: Don’t leave your fancy dishes in the cabinet gathering dust, use this as an excuse to get them out.
- Dress up: Even if you are eating a meal with your spouse and three children, make it a fancy meal and have everyone dress up a little!
- Set the mood: Light some candles and put some soft music on in the background.
- Set the tone: This is true ESPECIALLY if you have children. Let them know that this is going to be a special meal to celebrate ‘just for fun’ (unless you really have something to celebrate) and they need to display their best manners. This is also a great way to get them practicing their manner skills.
Crock pot Cornish Hens
These are so simple, and yet perfect for entertaining. They look fancy, but they are really so easy to prepare. If you are looking for an idea other than turkey for your holiday meal, this might be it.
They look great on a platter served whole, or you could cut them up in pieces (this is what we did for our family, since we have little hands and mouths).
I served my Cornish Hens with mashed potatoes, roasted root vegetables, green beans, bread and fruit.
Who knew a gourmet meal could be so easy?
